Keim Millwork is based in Holmes County, OH, a place known for having one of the largest Amish communities in the world.
The company started in 1911 when Mose J. Keim and his brother John built a two-story planning mill called Keim Bros in Charm, OH. Back then, most people in the area were farmers.
As the Amish population grew, not everyone could work on farms anymore. Different jobs were needed to sustain the family. Many people in the community were good at making furniture because they learned the skill when they were young, often from a grandfather.
By the early 1980s, a few stores in the community started selling locally handcrafted solid hardwood furniture. These Amish shops produced well-made furniture, which became very popular. Today there are many local woodshops that sell furniture all over the country.
The building trade also grew. Even today it is common for a young Amish man to build his own house with help from the community. With these skills, many have chosen to start contractor businesses.
This has created a network of businesses in our area woven together by the building and woodworking trades.
Keim Millwork, a division of The Keim Company, has been a part of this story for decades, supplying both builders and professional woodworkers with high-quality and custom products.
